This week’s question comes from music designer Tom Linker. He says
one of the biggest challenges in having live music for The Enchantment is
making sure that the orchestra’s tempo matches that of Lise Houlton’s
choreography. If the speeds are different it can greatly effect the audience’s
enjoyment of the performance.
The question is, what happens if once Lise and Tom agree on the music, Tom
learns that the musicians he chose cannot play music at that speed? What should
he do?
1) Fire the orchestra and hire a new orchestra that can play at the proper
tempo.
2) Simplify the orchestral parts, making it easier to play the pieces.
3) Have Tom play solos on the piano, knowing that alone he can play the music
at the correct tempo.
4) Don't use live music. Tom and his team can record the music before hand
and put it on a cd for the live show.
