The Minnesota Shubert Center will combine the vibrant Hennepin Center for the Arts with the historic 500-seat Shubert Theater to create a flagship home for dance and arts education in the heart of Minneapolis. More than 30 organizations, as well as many individual artists and students, will use the Shubert for affordable space to work, teach, rehearse and/or perform.
The Twin Cities is one of the nation’s leading communities for dance, distinguished by its breadth of high quality, artistically diverse, small- and mid-sized companies. We have been recognized by DanceUSA as one of the six most significant dance communities in America.
A core challenge facing our dance community is the absence of a dedicated home that builds and sustains audiences while helping elevate performances to new heights. The Minnesota Shubert Center will answer this need by providing arts partners with a premier venue that is centrally located, affordable, and specifically designed for the needs of dance. Like an appropriately lit art gallery or a concert hall with terrific acoustics, this dance-centric stage will allow our companies to fully shine.
Construction began in November 2009, with a projected opening date in 2011. We anticipate a $2.2 million annual operating budget. The Minnesota Shubert Center is a project of Artspace Projects, Inc., the nation’s leading developer for the arts.
